Melissa Shafer: BT's Loss is St.Luke's Gain

Melissa Shafer, who has been Bethlehem Township Manager since March 2014, is leaving the public sector for St. Luke's Hospital. She will be taking Jane George's job in government and community relations.

At St. Luke's, Shafer will be responsible for developing and maintaining positive working relationships with elected officials and their staffs. She will also review legislation and advocate policy positions.

During her tenure at Bethlehem Township, Shafer was an advocate of increased transparency. She started the practice of having everything considered by Township Commissioners made available online. She enhanced the Township website and promoted the use of social media that included Facebook, Instagram and YouTube. She also promoted Nixle, which warns residents about traffic changes or emergency situations. It has been activated three times in recent months for police standoffs.

Shafer is a graduate of Millersville University and has a Master's degree in Public Administration from Villanova University.

Before coming to Bethlehem Township, she was Chalfont Borough Manager for over six years.

Too bad there aren't many like her. Congrats and best wishes.

Told ya, she'd spend (taxpayer dollars) her way out of the township into an even bigger piggy bank of health care dollars...

As a resident, I think she's done a fine job and it's a shame to see her go. I suspect the haters are mainly the grumpy old white guy club who probably think the township might as well just lay off the police and the road crew to "keep taxes low."

The Township's property tax rate isn't the problem, it's the Bethlehem School District that is why your total amount of property taxes keeps going up and up out of control, and we are unfortunately chained to them. It is why, despite having a low township property tax, the total tax bill on a colonial-type house in nearby Hanover Township (once you include the BASD school tax) is $1,500-$2,000 per year more than it would be in someplace like Lower or Upper Macungie.

Melissa ----- thank you for all you have done and accomplished in the 6-7 years you were there. Bethlehem Township is left a better place and your impact will always be felt. You never backed away from challenges and every day you brought a warm smile and a lot of energy. You will be missed. Good luck on your new endevor. I hope they (st Lukes) are still paying for the reconstruction of the trestle bridge wink wink.

Congratulations to Shafer on her accomplishments and hard work for the township. In my many years working I have seen many ladder climbing achievers such as her cross my path. They are dynamic, charismatic and decisive. Unfortunately, they are usually also very driven to the point where they do not settle in one place for a long time, similar to Dr. Kimble on the old Fugitive television show! Truthfully, there is also always a bit of ego and self satisfaction sprinkled in. Though that seems to be part of the package to get such large scale improvements and adept management.

Bernie, my only concern is that this is the second ex-manager who can now sit on the opposite side of the table when negotiating or doing business with the township. Make no mistake, with St. Luke's owning that huge amount of land our leaders and staff will see her again for the other side. In my work, I must sign non-compete clauses sometimes to my own detriment. I hope our leaders can find a way to stop this trend. Likewise I hope St. Luke's would have the good sense and class to stop this conflict situation from ever occurring by keeping Shafer away from her former employers and colleagues on hospital business.

All in all, best of luck. I am sure we will read about many of her future accomplishments as her star continues to rise.
