How Did Stoffa Do in Sleepy Nazareth?

I live in Nazareth, just a stone's thrown from the Jacksonian Club. That's where Ann McHale was endorsed by the Joe Long Dems over incumbent Northampton County Exec John Stoffa. That news never trickled down to the unwashed masses. He won here, 195 to 127, with 60.5% of the vote.

I was invited to that event where "the committee" decided to endorse McHale, but it was called a petition signing event, and it just didn't seem worth the trip from Bethlehem since I had all the signatures I needed.

I now live in Lehigh County. I must admit, I was amazed to learn that the Northampton County Democratic Committee actually endorsed a slate of candidates for the primary. Isn't it the job of a Democratic committee to let the people choose the candidates in the primary, and then back their choices in the general? Anything else sounds positively Republican.

Joan,

I could not agree more!

Clicking on the link, I see that Stoffa won my neck of the woods 62% to 38%. Glad to see that though I switched parties last year my views are reflective of my neighboring Democrats.

Joan, Right on. It was good enough for Hillary and Barack, it should be good enough at all levels.

I think those 200,000 new PA Democrats Specter referenced were like me..."Reagan Democrats" who spent the past quarter century as Republicans, only to have the current W GOP remind us we were once Democrats.

I think that is why Stoffa has some appeal, and success, though not charisma.

Lighthouse,

John is too formal on TV. Watch some of the videos from last night. You'll see his quiet charm and deadpan humor.

John and I are long-time friends, and anyone who hasn't witnessed his charm is really missing something. And his wife, Barbara, is lovely and so genuine.

I hope John turns more of his attention during this term toward Bethlehem.

John, please come visit us in Bethlehem. The Memorial Day parade should be coming up soon. It's short, but a "must do" parade. I'd be proud to march with you.Congrats on your win, too!

People trust the guy. That's all he needed. They trusted him enough to keep him. That's a compliment in it's own right, regardless of what people think a candidate should be like.

Guess who's going to be the Grand Marshall of the Annual Kazoo Parade? I'll give you a hint, rhymes with Sofa.

Yes, he's giving me lessons.

Even the Morning Call isn't going to endorse candidates after this election I read on Bill White's blog.

Yeah right, I'll believe it when they don't endorse Charlie Dent/rip the Democratic nominee a new one within a month after the primary.
